Blazing Saddles 2009

The Alexandra Unit is a Specialist Palliative Care unit serving Dumfries & Galloway with some 150,000 residents in a widespread mainly rural community covering 2,400 square miles. It is situated within the Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary and provides access to all hospital services, as well as offering a quiet, relaxed atmosphere in a homely environment.

The principle aim of the unit is to enhance quality of life on a day-to-day basis. Care is provided by a multidisciplinary specialist team, encompassing medical, nursing, social work, physiotherapy, psychology, and spiritual care specialties all of which provided care for Dick.

The unit is bright and airy comprising of eight single bedrooms (with en suite shower and toilet facilities), a common room, outside terrace and ward kitchen. The emphasis is on offering comfort and flexibility in a warm and friendly atmosphere where patients can live as if they were at home whilst receiving specialist care. Unlike many hospital facilities, there is no restriction on visitors and many even stay overnight

A particular favourite of Dick's was the large bath! Where he was able to enjoy the benefits of a warm soak and 'hydrosound' - a stream of tingling bubbles, which pass through the water, like an electric Jacuzzi. Very occasionally with his favourite whiskey in hand!

Most patients require only a short stay in the Alexandra unit before being sent home with the ongoing support of a Macmillan nurse. However, in Dick's case, he stayed in the Alexandra Unit to receive the specialist care and support until he passed away.

Dick was so complimentary of the staff, service and facilities of the unit, that we are proud to be raising money to help the Alexandra Unit continue the excellent service it provides and support many more families like us in the future.
